When
I think about the holidays I think about underwear. Why
underwear? Because, underwear night has been a tradition in my
family for as long as I can remember. My family is Jewish and every
year during Hanukkah there was one night when my sisters and I got
underwear for a gift. When we were kids we hated underwear
night. Now that we are adults it is my favorite gift for two
reasons. First, because there is usually something special from my
parents in the bag with the underwear and second for the tradition it
represents. My mother recycles the famous underwear bags every year
so that when we see the purple bags come out, we know it is underwear
time. I really think my mom must start her underwear shopping very early,
because she always searches to find the perfect pair to match our
personalities. She has now included all spouses in this tradition
and as tradition goes, when you open your underwear bag you must proudly
wave them around for everyone to see. I encourage you to think
about your family traditions and the way they enhance your
holidays. If you don't have any traditions click the link below for
some ideas and start your traditions today.

In
2002, Roberta Paolo started a garden program at the Loveland Primary
and Elementary Schools that has come to be known as Granny's Garden
School. The seed for the idea that grew into the school
garden program began in her gardens.
She was the Granny nanny to her two grandchildren, Nicole and
Steven. They were four and five years old when she moved to a
little bungalow just down the road from the schools. They had
grown up in her backyard gardens picking green beans, digging potatoes,
pulling carrots and playing in the soil. In her efforts to create
a nurturing environment for them, she created a special place that
attracted both adults and children. The rule in her gardens was
that flowers were for picking.
These days Roberta spends most of her time
being "Granny" to Loveland 's K-4th graders.
But once a week, she takes off her Granny apron and becomes
"Grandma" to a new set of grandchildren, Lainey and Evelyn,
three and almost two.
